All of these sermons were delivered as part of regular Sunday morning worship at Sojourners United Church of Christ in Charlottesville, Virginia between February 1, 2000 and January 31, 2010. They are very much embedded in the life of that faith community. The specific words are mine, but the topics, themes, and questions that shaped these sermons belong to the congregation as a whole. The concerns that inform them were those of a young congregation that had some firmly established core values upon which the church had been founded but that was also asking basic questions about Christian life and belief and took very little for granted. The conversations that were taking place among us, or that were taking place in my head as a result of being at Sojourners, contributed substantially to my preaching, much more than any specific attributions could ever account for. In this sense, these are very much “sermons for Sojourners,” words connected to a specific time, place, and people. I am filled with gratitude for what the people of Sojourners United Church of Christ added to my spiritual life, some of which I hope comes through in these sermons.
